Shaping Future Leaders for a Lifetime of Ministry

by Freddy Orozco, CBC Alumnus

I chose Columbia Bible College because I wanted to learn the Bible better, and I wanted to do this while studying at a Mennonite Brethren school.

I was in the Biblical Studies Program and spent 5 years at CBC due to serving at a local church for an internship year between my fourth and fifth years of study. Both CBC and the local church (Northview Community Church in particular) played an important role in shaping my worldview, building and challenging my convictions, and giving me a setting to grow in character.

The classroom made a huge impact on me. I learned many new things, solidified existing views, and built meaningful relationships with several of the faculty of the school. CBC classes are small, so teachers are willing and able to connect with students 1-on-1 to discuss theology and life questions.

The community was warm and friendly, and exposed me to many different people from different backgrounds which grew my love for the local church. I currently serve as the Pastor of Young Adults at a local church and my Bible training, internship experience, and service practicum experience all played a role in building my theological foundation and in shaping my philosophy of ministry. I structure our programs, meet with people, and teach as informed by my previous learning and experiences. CBC played an important role in preparing me for my future in pastoral ministry.

I always encourage people to pursue further Christian education. No learning is ever wasted! When it comes to vocational ministry, I encourage people to start the process, but discern along the way if they have the desire, gifts, and character essential to pastoral ministry. Learning at CBC while attending a local church is a good way to grow in maturity and pursue vocational ministry.
