ON-HIST 283 Indigenous and Canadian History

This online course will centre on the impact of traditional perspectives of human identity and agency in a historical survey of Indigenous history in Canada. Through interactive readings and discussion, students will develop a historical perspective of Indigenous nations across the country from their creation stories into the twenty-first century. Topics will include pre-contact nation to nation relationships, the interaction with explorers, traders and the shifting economies, the relationship of church and missionaries within the colonial structures, the rise and resistance of the Métis and other Indigenous peoples, treaty-making, legacies of residential schools and child welfare, the rise of Red Power movements, contemporary cultural resurgence, and urban indigeneity.

Prerequisite: ON-IDIS 172 Intro to Indigenous Studies or 30 hours of college credit
